Since the release of the Dynavap M in 2017 up until the Dynavap M 2021, the M has been Dynavap’s ‘key to the Dynaverse’ - which is to say that it was their most affordable offering - priced at $50-$75. This changed with the release of the B in mid-2022 which is priced at $49, making it the latest ‘B’udget Dynavap.

Not only is the B friendlier on the wallet, but it also has unique features that make it stand out, rather just being a cheaper M. Dynavap has certainly cut corners to keep the price low but the good news is that the B manages to deliver a true Dynavap experience

Unboxing

The ‘budget’ aspect of the device pervades everything about the B, starting from the packaging. Unlike the M, Omni and Vong which come in distinct cardboard packaging along with a pamphlet explaining how the device works (and maybe a few freebies), the B arrives in a simple green plastic tube.

This is not a bad thing in my opinion. The tube is handy for carrying the B around in a pocket as it hides the smell and heat. However, it’s still a subtle reminder that the B is a ‘no frills’ offering, especially when you know that the tube is $1 in Dynavap’s store.

Style, Materials & Dimensions

The Dynavap B is the same length as the Dynavap M, which is 3.5”. It is Dynavap’s lightest device though, weighing in at just 13 grams. The main reason for this is that the B’s stem is made of silicone, unlike the metallic stems of their other models.

The ‘default’ colour for the stem is black and Dynavap have also released ‘neon’ variants of it in pink, blue and green. More colours will most likely follow in the future.

The silicone stem feels soft when held and the tip and condenser fit snugly; there is no wobbling or fear of the device falling apart. The silicone stem is probably even more durable than the metal stems when it comes to surviving falls.

It also gets less hot than metal stems and is wider at the top which makes it easier to hold. These things make the silicone stem a better choice for beginners

More importantly, the quality of the silicone is decent enough as it does not have any noticeable odour. It does not affect the taste of the vapour at all because the stem is lined with a stainless steel condenser, which is the same as the one used in the M and Vong.

The tip and stem follow an angular design theme which I quite like. The angular design is a great idea for the stem because it prevents the device from rolling when kept on a flat surface, unlike other models that have cylindrical stems and easily roll off flat surfaces. The stem also keeps the tip elevated which is useful for preventing the tip and cap from touching unwanted surfaces while hot.

Though the B and VonG stems may appear similar, the B does not fit natively in 14mm bongs, unlike the VonG. To use the B with water pieces, you will need to buy the fat mouthpiece, which is a confusing and odd decision as it would have made B an amazing value if it had a 14mm taper instead of 10mm. I can't complain too much as the WPA only costs $2, but it does feel a bit like an unnecessary compromise.

Just like the Dynavap M, the Dynavap B’s tip is made of stainless steel too. The similarity ends here as everything else about the tip is totally different. The B’s tip has a ‘half bowl’, meaning that the bowl that holds the herb is smaller than other Dynavap tips. Also notably, it has a single cooling fin unlike the multiple cooling fins and notches on other Dynavap tips.

The final part of the B is the Captive Cap which is made of a stainless steel alloy. The cap is common across all Dynavap devices including the M, Omni and Vong. It contains two metallic disks that click to indicate that the tip has reached optimal vaporisation temperatures.

Half Bowl: Good or Bad?

dynavap b tip

When I first saw pictures of the B and read its features, it baffled me that Dynavap decided to go with a half bowl tip for its new device. I was initially disappointed that Dynavap is forcing customers to use the half bowl. The concept of the half bowl is not new, as all Dynavap devices and tips made from 2020 onwards come with a groove inside the bowl which is called the ‘half bowl setting’

While it does have its fans, I found the setting too finicky as the screen would automatically slip back down into the full bowl position. Due to this, I was never able to give the half bowl a fair shot. There is also the psychological block that the half bowl will only be half as effective. It pleasantly surprised me to realise that this isn’t the case.

Firstly, the half bowl is more like a 70% bowl but the most astonishing part is that it seems to be almost as effective as a full bowl. Though my tolerance took a couple of days to adjust, I found that I was quite happy sticking to the half bowl for most sessions. It now feels wasteful to use more than it and I’m also indirectly saving money by conserving herb.

All in all, my disappointment has disappeared after actually using the device and I can honestly declare that I’m a half bowl convert. That being said, anyone with a higher tolerance can simply do back-to-back bowls if the bowl size is inadequate.

Power & Controls

The Dynavap B works in exactly the same way as other Dynavap devices when it comes to powering the device and controlling the vaporization temperature. It can be powered using a butane torch or induction heater and the Captive Cap allows you to roughly control the temperature by heating high or low on the cap. Read my Comprehensive Guide for Dynavap Newbies to learn to how use the device.

Experience

Though all Dynavap models operate the same way, there is noticeable variance when it comes to the performance of the devices. The B is designed specifically for newbies and the performance reflects that.

The B tip heats up slower than other models which translates to the tip being more forgiving in regard to combustion. A newbie who accidentally heats past the click is less likely to burn the herb.

The flip side of this is that the user has to perfect their heating technique to get the thickest clouds possible. Once users have their technique down, there’s a fair chance that they might want to upgrade to a Titanium tip or even an entirely new device like the Vong or Omni for faster extraction. Of course, upgrading is not a necessity as the B is a complete and capable device in itself.

Cleaning and Maintainance

Dynavaps are already renowned for being virtually invincible and the B takes this a step further. It is Dynavap’s easiest device to maintain as it foregoes even the o-rings used in other devices. The silicone stem negates the need for o-rings and only the cap, tip and condenser need serious cleaning. These parts can be cleaned easily using 99.9% isopropyl alcohol. Conclusion

Dynavap appears to have a clear goal with the B - to pull new users into the Dynaverse. This is apparent not just from the price but also from tip being specially designed to minimise the chance of combustion. The Dynavap M has been a top recommendation for budget TEDs from the time the first one came out. Dynavap has now made dry herb vaporisers even more accessible and though there are compromises, the B is still a solid device for anyone looking to put smoking behind them.

What I thought would be the biggest drawback - the half bowl - turned out to not be a drawback at all. It made me realise that I was probably using more bud than needed because of the efficiency of vaporising herb.

The B is thoughtfully designed and while it is decidedly not premium, it does not feel cheap either. The B’s primary purpose is to function well as a dry herb vaporiser and it succeeds in this regard.
